Elvira Dyangani, Director of MACBA: "Anticolonial Barcelona and the possibility of a Black planet". Coordinated by Isabel Tejeda
Other museums, other perspectives, is a lecture series in which museum directors explain the history and purpose of the institution they represent and its uniqueness within the Spanish context of contemporary art museums.
Discover the intersection between music and visual art in the Graphic Music Workshop, a creative laboratory where sound and image communicate with each other. This space is an invitation to play, experimentation, and collective imagination, in which participants of all ages and levels discover unique forms of expression through graphic scores.
Each session is unique and different. Throughout the workshop you will explore how to draw music and how to sonically interpret visual works, with inspiring examples from artists and composers who have worked on this artistic frontier. Through participatory dynamics, you will learn to create your own graphic scores and make them sound in surprising ways.
It is recommended to bring your own drawing materials. No prior training is necessary.
Visit the Kara Walker exhibition with a silhouette workshop aimed at exploring how images shape our perception of the world and history, while reflecting on our own identity within that context and creating a work that dialogues between the personal and the collective, between the individual and the historical.
We were coming from the previous session, MutaPlantas, very pleased with the feeling of having discovered the concept of "myths of the future", "Fed up already with past mythologies, we propose a future mythology, to dream with…" we said in the previous report. And that pushed us to continue in this session with that idea, because talking about desirable futures is a proactive attitude towards change, and if the fabulation of the mythical origin of things helps us understand the present, imagining retroactively the path towards the future from a myth created within 500 years, which looks at the past (our present) and mythically fabulates its present (our future)… it can be a very powerful tool of speculative fiction!
–But how do we do it? –we asked ourselves.
The "hall of mirrors" and kinetic art
This session was going to be special, because it coincided with the DIM – International Museum Day. And to hold a session focused on the interior of the museum, we decided at the time that it would be on its 3rd floor, where the kinetic sculptures of Eusebio Sempere rest. "The hall of mirrors", we said. We had already talked about the oval that floats in the museum's vestibule in the Arborescent session, fabulating its changing reflections and its geometry of rods repeated in space. So on this occasion we decided that the attendees would create myths that look towards the future using the qualities of kinetic art as a creative activator. Kinetic art or kineticism is an artistic movement that integrates physical-spatial movement as a compositional element: the real physical movement of the work, the movement of the eye over the piece and the physical movement of the spectator cause the works to transform, change their appearance and their relationship with space. They also use light as a plastic element, transform it and use it to create spatial effects and transform the surrounding space, and the phenomenon of optical perception creating visual rhythms, the superposition of ambiguous geometric forms and dynamic luminous perception. Furthermore, Eusebio Sempere has a very special relationship with the museum: his donation of a contemporary art collection was the trigger for converting the old Casa de la Asegurada into the current Museum of Contemporary Art of Alicante. Sempere almost made the museum appear with the works he brought with him, he placed them in a place and around them a Museum grew (with architectural reforms and later expansions). That image of the power of a work of art not only to transform the surrounding space, but to create it! was wonderful, so we began there!
SoniArt presents a concert of newly created music. Guest composer Natalia G. Iglesias.
SoniArt 2025 is presented with the intention of continuing to consolidate a cycle of concerts among audiences who appreciate and are attracted to contemporary art. There are various challenges that contemporary art must face, one of the most recurring being the lack of understanding with which the public justifies the disinterest with which they observe current artistic manifestations. Undoubtedly, when a composer speaks about their work, showing their creative processes as well as their motivations and expressive needs, greater connection with the audience is achieved and the path toward acceptance of the work is cleared. Our personal reality pushes us toward different sensations according to our vital moment. But understanding the artist's thinking and their creative processes allow us to obtain a real approach to the creation of works, to the aesthetic fact, and to the artist's motivations.
Curated by the exhibition commissioner, Rosa M.ª Castells.
The exhibition brings together the numerous works by Kara Walker present in the MACA collection COLEC-003. 44 pieces that cover part of her trajectory and constitute one of the most complete sets of the artist's work existing in European institutions. Here are shown drawings, prints, sculptures, artist books and one of her most recent videos, a total of 31 works donated to MACA in 2021 and 13 pieces deposited in 2024 for this exhibition that have traveled from New York
For adult audiences. Free admission until capacity is reached.
Scenic exhibition resulting from the youth laboratory of the No More Boring Artists program. A theatrical proposal where the circus becomes a metaphor for resistance and community. Collective creation. Young protagonists. Pure emotion.
"What more can be lost when nothing is left? That is the question asked by the circus members when the great tragedy occurs. Determined to change the course of this story told with humor and sarcasm, they will make us reflect on how solidarity, teamwork, and the magic that surrounds a spectacle can break the cycle of slavery and poverty at the expense of a few. Or at least that's what they thought."
About the project:
The exhibition is the result of the scenic laboratory conducted during the first months of 2025 at the MACA. A collective project that combines object theater, contemporary creation, and social reflection through live arts, and is part of the "No More Boring Artists" program, a youth scenic reference since 2021.
