Artwork text

Still Life is a small oil painting by Carmen Laffon dated around 1976-1977. The provenance of the work is not documented, although it is likely that it came to the collection through direct acquisition or exchange, given the recognition that Laffon already had in those years in Spanish artistic circles and the friendship that united her with Sempere.

In this still life toned in greens, blues and mauves, three elements are arranged: a ceramic bowl painted with dark fruits, a glass vase with a bouquet of wildflowers and a cup with its saucer on the right. The brushstroke is loose and atmospheric, without defined contours, with flashes of white, lilac and yellow that emerge from the general chromatic mass. The light does not fall from a specific point, but rather seems diffuse, interior, as if the objects were radiating it from within.

Carmen Laffon was one of the most singular figures in Spanish painting of the second half of the twentieth century. Trained in Seville and Rome, she developed a body of work of an intimate character centered on still life, landscape and the figure, with a technique that connects with the tradition of Spanish naturalistic painting without renouncing a very personal sensibility. Her presence in this collection, largely focused on abstraction and international avant-garde, is a testament to the breadth of criteria with which Sempere built the ensemble.
