Carmen Laffon

[Laffon, Carmen]

Seville, Spain, 1934 - Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Spain, 2021

Born in Seville in 1934. He completed his studies at the School of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel of Hungary in his city and also at San Fernando in Madrid.
He joined the Biosca Gallery in Madrid in the sixties, becoming linked to the Juana Mordó Gallery project from 1964 onwards. Later he would collaborate in the founding and subsequent trajectory of the La Pasarela gallery in Seville. He was linked to the artists of the so-called Cuenca Group who always championed his painting. A great friend of Rueda and Torner, his friendship with Zóbel, with whom he shared a studio in the seventies, led to the connection of new artistic currents to the adventure of the Cuenca museum.
Carmen Laffon is essentially a painter of social realism, since in her reproduction of objects and environments there is a doubly humanistic intention: on the one hand, she aims to make the most intimate and direct testimony of the everyday, exalting the still life object, transforming it into living nature, on the other hand, according to Moreno Galvañ, she goes beyond the very limits of realism, carrying out an impressionist revolution within it.
In 1959 she was awarded the Rábida Prize in Seville and in 1982 she received the National Prize for Plastic Arts. Her work could be seen retrospectively in 1992 at the Reina Sofía National Museum of Art Center.
