Artwork text

Light Structure is a large-scale work that Le Parc created probably expressly for this museum, following the same criterion with which Sempere commissioned other singular pieces for the collection. The work arrived disassembled and was assembled in the museum following the artist's instructions, of which Sempere left a detailed drawing.

The work is resolved in two planes. The background is neutral: a canvas painted white to which a rod is screwed, from which fifteen small mirror-polished stainless steel plates are suspended by fifteen vertical threads, each oriented at different angles. The light that falls on them is continuously fragmented and redistributed, generating reflections and shadows that shift with any minimal air current or variation in light.

Le Parc himself described the principle of these works: "The real elements (the metal plates) lost their presence and their reality was confused with the forms produced by reflections, shadows and the variability of viewpoints". The object exists, but what is seen is the light it produces.

Julio Le Parc is one of the central figures of kinetic art and perceptual research in the sixties. His presence in the collection is one of the most eloquent testimonies of Sempere's interest in international kinetic art and the friendships that united him with most of the artists of the movement.
