Artwork text

Rythme coloré no. 963 is part of the folder Poésie de mots, poésie de couleurs [Poetry of Words, Poetry of Colors] composed of six etchings by Sonia Delaunay that accompany poems by Arthur Rimbaud, Tristan Tzara, Philippe Soupault, Blaise Cendrars, Joseph Delteil and Stéphane Mallarmé. It was published by the Denise René Gallery in Paris in 1962, coinciding with an individual exhibition of the artist, in an edition of 50 copies. Sempere acquired this copy, number 33, in 1977.

The print presents two circles of concentric colors composed of several discs, some within others that overlap and intersect: reds, greens, blues and mauves on a background of dense black hatching printed in etching. The color, applied in aquatint through separate plates, is flat and saturated, without gradations. The composition has no hierarchy or fixed center: the circles relate to each other through contrast and proximity, generating a visual rhythm that justifies the title. It is the theory of simultaneous color contrast that Sonia Delaunay developed together with Robert Delaunay from the nineteen-tens, transferred here to the territory of printmaking.

Sonia Delaunay-Terk is one of the most relevant figures of the European avant-gardes of the first half of the twentieth century. She developed a body of work that overflowed the limits of painting to extend to textile design, fashion, set design and illustration, turning simultaneism into a language applied to all areas of everyday life.
