Sonia Delaunay

[Delaunay, Sonia]

Gradzhsk, Ukraine, 1885 - Paris, France, 1979

She was a French painter and designer of Russian origin, married to painter Robert Delaunay.
Inspired by the forms of cubism and the colors of Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh and the Orphists, she developed, from 1910 onwards, a style based on the juxtaposition or 'simultaneous contrast' of pure colors broken into prisms. She is considered the queen of art deco.
She exhibited paintings, fabrics and bindings made with this technique and also designed costumes for theater.
In the 1920s Delaunay devoted herself to clothing design and her hand-painted fabrics with bright colors that revolutionized textile design.
After 1940 her style became more delicate and simple, especially in gouaches, where her chromatic experiments reached new heights of refinement.
In 1964, the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris received a donation of 58 of her works, which were exhibited in the Louvre, making her the first woman who, during her lifetime, saw her paintings exhibited in that museum.
