Chief Accountant is a work from 1966 that belongs to one of the most personal and committed periods of Juana Francés, one of the three Alicante artists present in the collection and one of the few female artists represented in it. The work was a gift or exchange with the artist herself, whom Sempere admired.

The piece is a three-dimensional object almost twenty centimeters deep: a black box within another black box, with a character in the center formed by a rounded head of corroded and oxidized matter, with binoculars as eyes. Chief Accountant is a character identified with high power structures, a threatening and oppressive power, the title of this piece so representative of the interests of the Alicante artist in the 60s and 70s. Already in her last informal paintings humanoid forms can be glimpsed that will soon become monstrous faces. Juana represented human figures, constructed with gadgets and mechanical materials: screws, nuts, wheels, cables, watch parts, spark plugs, plugs…. or watchful binoculars. Juana invents in her collages strange characters whom she encloses in her black boxes, victims of loneliness, isolation and lack of communication. Heads housed in boxes as if they were windows, in buildings and urban settings, that imprison beings with legs or wheels.

The ironic titles of these works evoke the loneliness of the human being overwhelmed by the same forces that he himself has created. For Juana, it is a period of artistic maturity where underlying criticism of a society that numbers and files everything, where the person, objectified, experiences a profound loneliness in the immense clamor of the world in which we live.
