Symposium: "Art and Design in the Ecological Transition"

Submitted by brandcode_deweloper on
Conferences
September 16, 2025.

Organized by: Product Design Department of EASDA, School of Art and Higher Design of Alicante and MACA

In a historical moment marked by climate collapse, loss of biodiversity, and a systemic linear economy, this symposium urges critical, ethical, and ecological analysis of the anthropocentric era. An era rooted in the conception of the natural world as an unlimited resource destined to be exploited, consumed, and discarded.
The five voices propose an interwoven vision of the ecological transition through design research, artistic practice, and collaboration between academia and industry, addressing contemporary challenges and environmental activism from different perspectives.

The symposium highlights the role of art and design as transformative agents, capable of imagining other futures and of questioning, from the present, the footprint of objects whose scale exceeds human experience of time and the implications of inhabiting a finite planet.

Expert Panel and Presentations:
Irene Brotóns Brotóns. "Designing the Ecological Transition. Beyond Extractivism"
Ana Martínez Gorostiza. "Contemporary Environmental Photography. From Awareness to Evidence"
Inma Peñate Cerro. "Art and Design for a Sustainable Industry"
David Villalba Díaz. "Notes for a Form. From the Limits of the Visual to Speculative Archaeology"

The MACA hosts the debate "Rethinking exhibitions of women artists" organized by the MAV Association (Women in the Visual Arts)

Submitted by brandcode_deweloper on
Female artists represent 25.6% in the 14 temporary exhibitions currently hosted by the city of Alicante, although if we consider individual and collective exhibitions separately, things change. There is only 1 individual exhibition dedicated to a female artist, the one that the Alicante University Museum (MUA) dedicates to Alissia, pseudonym of researcher and professor María Penalva titled "REVERS.A /REVERS.Ø / REVERSE.E", which represents 12.5% in temporary individual exhibitions. This imbalance is especially significant because individual exhibitions allow for a better appreciation of an artist's creative universe and therefore their consolidation. With regard to collective exhibitions, the presence of women begins to become visible from the 20th century onwards.

Why is it still difficult for female artists to access an individual exhibition and, therefore, to show their work in a more complete and rigorous way? How can we achieve greater balance in the exhibition programming of museums and artistic spaces? What is the best way to make the work of female artists public? To debate these issues, the MAV association (Women in the Visual Arts) has organized the cycle "DebatsMAV: Repensant les exposicions d'artistes dones" whose next session will take place on November 23rd, at 6 p.m., at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MACA) in Alicante. The debate will be opened by 3 prominent women from the art world: Rosa Castells, director of MACA, Rocío de la Villa, director of the M- Arte y Cultura Visual magazine, curator and university professor, and the renowned artist Paloma Navares. Cultural manager Sofía Albero Verdú will moderate this third colloquium.
