In its 5th edition, Menuts Veïns was presented with an opportunity that could not be turned down. The project was going to be the umbrella under which a collaboration would develop that would bring together artistic creation and education.
This collaboration was established between the museum, Alicante-based artist Olga Diego, and IES Miguel Hernández, a school that requested to be part of Menuts Veïns, with the aim of incorporating the languages of contemporary artistic creation as instruments of expression, understanding, and reflection of reality in learning processes. Olga Diego creates her sculptures using plastic with the intention that her works make people reflect on the environmental problems generated by this material. IES Miguel Hernández joined the project by incorporating it into the General Annual Programming.
The work designed by Olga Diego and carried out in conjunction with the Technology Department of IES consists of the construction of a floating sculpture in the shape of an island or iceberg that would be installed in the sea for a limited period. It would later be removed from the water and displayed on land.
Its form is a simplified interpretation of the concept of an island. From land, we could see a large spherical section floating in the sea, where the curved line of its surface would barely be interrupted by some mound of plastic rock.
Beneath it, and only through immersion in water, we could contemplate how the construction of the surface extends several meters in depth. Like an iceberg... the island would show there, among the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, its hidden spherical and luminous beauty.
After its exhibition in the sea, it would be displayed at the institute itself and, on International Museum Day, in the Plaza de Santa María, in front of MACA, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Alicante. The project took on such magnitude that other schools joined and collaborated both in the collection of bottles and in the construction of the modules, promoting parallel work around environmental protection.
This year 2020, the pandemic crossed our path and paralyzed our project, leaving it suspended until the return to classes in September, when the three parties of Menuts Veïns 2020 expressed the desire to bring this wonderful proposal to an end.
Floating Island was supposed to be floated in the sea at the end of March. It could not be. But we displayed it at MACA for the surprise and reflection of all our visitors during the months of November and December.
