Artwork text

This lithograph belongs to a portfolio folder titled Monument To Vittorio Emmanuelle (Project for Piazza del Duomo, Milano), composed of five lithographs, three of them with factory collage in thread, fabric and staples, and 3 black and white photographs by Ugo Mulas mounted on cardboard. It is accompanied by an unillustrated text by Tomasso Trini. The edition and printing was carried out by Polígrafa of Barcelona and 75 copies signed and numbered by the artist were published, plus 10 artist's proofs and 10 HC copies (out of commerce). Sempere acquired this lithograph, copy number 73, from Ediciones Polígrafa in 1976.

The work documents an action carried out in autumn of 1970. Christo Javacheff and Jeanne Claude Denat de Guillebon wrapped with polypropylene fabric and red polypropylene rope the Monument to Vittorio Emanuelle in Piazza del Duomo in Milan, a monument to Italy's last king. After being wrapped and remaining so for 44 hours, the preparatory drawings and photographs of the completed work were used to create this Portfolio folder. While the Monument to Vittorio Emanuelle was wrapped, it served as a platform for speakers proposing revolutionary actions at the rallies held in Piazza del Duomo.

The original of this serialized collage is found in the Jeanne-Claude Christo Collection of New York and is inscribed in a special creative moment of wrapping monuments in a city like Milan, the Monument to Vittorio Enmmanuelle in Piazza del Duomo (to which this collage belongs) and the Monument to Leonardo da Vinci in Piazza Scala. His works occupied public space to make it visible again, forcing the viewer to become aware of what habit had made invisible.
