The Venezuelan artist based in Berlin Arturo Herrera uses image fragmentation strategies appropriated from popular culture and animation to create a multidisciplinary body of work that encompasses painting, collage, sculpture, multiples, graphic work, photography, and mural painting. Although his work starts from figurative images, his different series of works are stylistically situated in a borderline territory between abstraction and figuration. Herrera borrows and manipulates iconic and familiar images from books and the world of animation, to confront imagery coming from the popular with the formal languages of the modern pictorial tradition, and in particular with that of abstraction, and to investigate opposing concepts such as the solemn and the playful. Herrera applies in his work an exercise of deconstruction of memory and the familiar, through the use of a wide variety of materials, thus creating new images that retain traces and evocative signals of another visual world. The collection of works by Arturo Herrera in the collection is one of the most complete in European institutions.
