Artwork text

The Multicolored Bouquet is a color lithograph published in 1975 by Maeght in Paris and printed at the Atelier Mourlot in an edition of 50 copies. This is copy number 49, acquired by Sempere from Maeght Editeur in February 1976.

This Multicolored Bouquet is an enchanted scene that radiates a profound sense of joy. A vase with a large bouquet of flowers occupies the center of the work, overflowing with its size beyond the composition. Around it, as in a carousel, float fantastic creatures: an upside-down musician, a ram, a hen… In the background, in the distance, a picturesque village with a multitude of joyful people, and in the lower right margin, a couple of lovers in an affectionate gesture. A luxurious orchestra of colors fuchsia pink, canary yellow, gold, blue and green in short and irregular brushstrokes, emphasized by the black charcoal lines.

Marc Chagall developed throughout his long career a personal language in which the memory of his childhood in Vitebsk, the traditions of the Jewish community and Slavic folklore combine with influences from Fauvism and Cubism. His dreamlike compositions, with floating figures and humanized animals, place him in a singular position within the avant-gardes of the twentieth century, close to Surrealism, but outside its theoretical programs.
