Artwork text

The pictorial work, drawings and graphic work of Sylvia Plimack Mangold, resulting from meticulous observation and direct personal experience, is dominated by two themes: the floors of interior spaces and the trees of the property where she lives and works. The aesthetic concerns of her early period, to which this work Floor II from 1974 belongs, place these early works in dialogue with minimalist statements. However, Plimack Mangold moves away from minimalism in her interest in exploring three spatial dimensions and the everyday. In this piece the artist provides us with a direct, though cropped, image of a section of her studio floor, made of wooden planks. This vision cannot be any closer because it would transform the object into something abstract and generalized, nor can it be any further away since it is not about showing the entire physical space, but rather a glimpse of an interior landscape. Her work is situated between figurative language and abstraction and poetically forms a portrait of the world close to the artist.
