Artwork text

Promenade is a color lithograph published by the Maeght Gallery in Paris, printed at the Mourlot workshop and included in issues 101-103 of the Derrière le Miroir magazine, published in 1957. The print held by the museum is copy number 40 from an edition of 300, and reproduces an original watercolor from 1920 whose full title is Promenade, later donated by Nina Kandinsky to the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.

On a neutral background, patches of yellow, blue, green and brown coexist with free and taut black strokes, in a composition that emanates a light and almost musical energy, in keeping with the title that the artist himself assigned to it. The forms do not represent anything recognizable, but neither are they arbitrary: they respond to an internal logic that Kandinsky explored with theoretical rigor in his writings.

Kandinsky was a decisive reference for Eusebio Sempere. During his years in Paris, the artist from Alicante had the opportunity to study his work in several exhibitions and to establish a personal relationship with Nina Kandinsky, the painter's widow, whom he visited at her home in January 1955. From that afternoon he wrote: "She showed us the studio and the works she keeps and it seemed to me a treasure. I myself placed the paintings she indicated on the easel and they are so beautiful that it was difficult for me to bear so much emotion without crying".
