Mexican artist Graciela Iturbide is one of the most important and influential Latin American photographers of the last five decades. Her extensive body of work, the result of her numerous travels throughout Mexico and other countries, is a perspective that combines beauty, mystery, and visual power. Her highly contrasted black and white photographs accentuate the severity of the subjects. Although Iturbide's work begins with documentary photography, her work goes beyond to explore the difficult cohabitation of ancient cultural traditions and their contemporary interpretations. Also to investigate the real and the psychological, and the relationship between man and nature. One of her main interests has been documenting the role of women, especially from the Juchitán area in Oaxaca, where women occupy positions of power and gender stereotypes are often subverted. To this series belongs Our Lady of the Iguanas, one of Iturbide's most famous photographs.
