California photographer Steve Morrison began his career in the mid-1980s, during the critical years when the AIDS epidemic struck particularly hard on the east and west coasts of the United States. His work, carried out fundamentally in black and white, focuses on the portrait of the male body, with most of his images taken in New York and San Francisco. The models in his photographs represent the gay community, and Morrison often captures close-ups of his subjects' faces with their eyes closed, as well as their hands to penetrate beyond the surface of the skin and reach more deeply into the soul of the individual. This photograph by Morrison in the collection, Dean's Hand, belonged to the private collection of Felix Gonzalez-Torres, who two years later, in 1992, would create his work Untitled (for Jeff), one of his famous billboards for public display, showing a similar image.
