Matt Saunders' interdisciplinary work is established at the boundary between photography, painting, video, and installation. His experimental photographic work, created without the aid of a camera, began in 2008. It is a technically complex process: Saunders creates paintings to use as "negatives," thus continuing the photogram tradition. Canvases, paint, and other materials incorporated into the canvas surface become the filter through which light passes onto photographic paper. The result is unique prints (not in editions), often large-scale portraits, that sit between painting and photography. Asta Mirror (Pour) #4 is one of these works. It is a portrait of Danish actress Asta Nielsen, from her film Der Absturz (1922), which Saunders creates following the aforementioned technique, with the developer painted onto the paper (instead of immersing the print in a bath) to obtain uneven development.
