[Millares Sall, Manuel]
Born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1926, he died in Madrid on August 14, 1972 suffering from an incurable disease. He moved to Madrid in 1955. In 1957 he founded with Rafael Canogar, Luis Feito, Juana Francés, Antonio Saura, Manuel Rivera, Pablo Serrano, Antonio Suárez, Manuel Conde and José Ayllón the group El Paso, a group that is politically imprecise, although some of its members such as Saura and Millares are close to the PCE, but the group as such is considered independent. The causes of its disappearance were many and varied: individual rivalries, a certain sense of fatigue. It soon became the expression of Spanish avant-garde art. Some of its characteristics have a marked Spanish accent: dramaticism, chromaticism, realistic emphasis, expressiveness, etc.
In 1956 and 1958 he participates in the Venice Biennale. In 1957 he exhibits his burlap works in Madrid (Ateneo, Sala del Prado) and that same year he is present with an individual exhibition at the IV São Paulo Biennial.
In 1971 he wrote a book titled Memoria de una excavación urbana (Memory of an Urban Excavation) which was published posthumously in 1973. It is a work that helps us understand the painter's work and know how he saw himself.
