José Guerrero

Painter and engraver of ABSTRACT style being recognized by many young artists as one of the most relevant painters for the latest generations.

He studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Granada and later at the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid, where he was a student of Vázquez Díaz

In 1945 he moved to Paris after winning a scholarship to study at the Faculty of Fine Arts. He learned much from the work of Picasso, Matisse, Miró and Gris.

In 1950 he moved to New York and in 1953 obtained American citizenship. There he began to create abstract works. Incorporated into the New York School, Guerrero participated with his works of great lyrical sense in various exhibitions with the painters of Action Painting, although his work was always considered by critics as different, heir to the Spanish, Mediterranean and Andalusian tradition.

Throughout his life, Guerrero held numerous exhibitions of his work, including:

- The Arts Club, Chicago (Guerrero's first individual exhibition in 1954, held together with Joan Miró).
- Guggenheim Museum, New York.
- Gloria Vanderbilt Museum, New York.
- Dallas Museum for Contemporary Arts.
- Whitney Museum, New York.
- Worcester Museum, Massachusetts.

Guerrero's works are found in the collections of MUSEUMS AND COLLECTIONS SUCH AS:

- Guggenheim Museum, New York.
- Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art.

In the year 2000, the José Guerrero Art Center was inaugurated in Granada, created from the donation made by the artist's widow to the Provincial Council.
