Ann Toebbe

Ann Toebbe records in paintings and drawings the architecture of domestic environments that have some sentimental connection with the artist, in the manner of a diary. Toebbe meticulously recreates the different spaces of homes that she or someone in her circle has inhabited, making use of multiple visual perspectives. In her works the spaces unfold in a flattened manner, with barely any dimension and often focused on the center of the image. Toebbe pays special attention to the details of the different rooms, always absent of their occupants. Her work has been related to the aesthetics of the Naïve movement, due to the rudimentary simplicity of the images and the unorthodox use of perspective rules and compositional conventions. Her pencil drawing "Friend:Janet" is a preparatory sketch in which, as in the rest of her works, the interiors function as psychological portraits of the occupants.
